WHAT IS SAT MATH EXAM

SAT Math focuses on areas of mathematics that play the biggest role in your career path:

• Heart of Algebra, which focuses on the mastery of linear equations and systems.
• Problem Solving and Data Analysis as quantitative literacy (ratios, percentages, and proportional reasoning)
• Passport to Advanced Math with subjects that require processing complex mathematical equations and functions typically needed in a STEM-based—science, technology, engineering, and math—career.

The SAT Mathematics test also includes Additional Topics in Math, which include geometry, trigonometry, radian measure, and complex numbers, which occupy an important position in university preparation.

The SAT Math test consists of two parts: the no-calculator portion and the calculator portion. In both portions, the majority of the test consists of multiple-choice questions, but at the end of the chapter, some questions are in the style that awaits you to write (these are known as “grid-ins”).

 

The SAT Math sections consist of a total of 58 questions: 45 multiple-choice questions and 13 student-produced response questions. You’ll see one 55-minute section with 38 questions (calculators ok) and one 25-minute section with 20 questions (calculators not permitted).

The five-choice multiple-choice questions require students to solve a problem and select the best answer from the available choices. The student-produced response questions require students to solve a problem and grid the correct answer; the questions do not provide answer choices. The answer to each gridded-response question is a positive number—e.g., positive fraction, decimal, or integer—that will be entered on the answer sheet into a grid.

The Math Test will also include reference information. You may find these facts and formulas helpful as you answer some of the test questions, but to do well, you should already be comfortable working with these facts and formulas.
